Writing Identities Not Your Own: Speculative Fiction
A Talk by Alex Temblador (Award-Winning Author)
About this Talk
Crafting characters with historically marginalized identities is not an easy task, but how does a writer go about it when they’re building a fantastical, futuristic, speculative, or magical world? In this one hour presentation titled, Writing Identities Not Your Own: Speculative Fiction, award-winning author Alex Temblador will show writers how biases might result in stereotypes, harmful storylines, and problematic descriptions or dialogue. The seminar is inspired by her writing craft book, Writing An Identity Not Your Own: A Guide For Creative Writers, and will cover how writers can approach crafting more authentic and complex characters whose identities are historically marginalized from the pre-writing to the editing phase. Speculative fiction writers of all skill levels, genres, and focus (YA, MG, or adult) are welcome.
